Poker Sit and Go Report: Making the Big Lay Down

When you are first starting out in poker tournaments or poker in general, one of the toughest things to master is making a big lay down. A lot of emotions tend to get in the way of your better judgment at game critical intersects. Even when you simply know better, it can be extremely difficult to find that fold button.

This is why reloading is so common for new players. You see a lot of new players actually do know that KJos, and A9s aren't great a hands to call a big raise with. At least, they know it in theory. In a game situation, it is a much different story, even for the most experienced players. When you are sitting at a table and have been raised out of your blind for the 6th time in a row by a yappy, Mike Matusow type maniac, well, certain aspects of your character will run your decision making as opposed to common sense.

In a sense, this is what poker is all about. Haven't you noticed that the players who can manage their emotions at the table are often the ones with the most success? When was the last time you saw Howard Lederer, Dan Harrington or Phil Gordon chastise somebody for any reason at the table?

Here are some strategies you can use (while thinking to yourself) that will help control your emotions and get a handle on the real situation at hand, and give yourself the ability and power to make the big lay down. Yes, it is power to make a big lay down.

When confronted with a game critical intersect, I try to ponder these 3 things before I make a decision.

What is the REAL strength of my hand?

How CREDIBLE are my opponents?

Am I giving myself a qualified CHANCE to win this tournament?

Counting to 10 is also a good idea, but these are the things you should be thinking about when you are counting. Trust me, these steps will save your sorry a%$ more than once from committing poker suicide.

You may have heard poker pros or analysts refer to "not making a mistake" during a tournament. Well as imperfect mammals that we are, mistakes will happen from time to time. Just ask any of these same pros. What your goal should be is to keep those errors to a minimum and recognize that the power to lay down a big hand is usually counter-point to what your emotions are telling you do.
